If you arrive in Canada in October and walk into a bar on a Saturday night, you'll see dozens of eyes glued to screens broadcasting men on skates gliding across the ice. That's Hockey Night in Canada, and it's practically a national religion.

Why hockey and not another sport?

Three factors created the Canadian passion for the game:

1. Favorable climate: 4–6 months of cold weather a year allow lakes and rinks to stay frozen for long stretches. Before artificial rinks, natural ice was abundant.

2. British-European origins: early settlers played ancestral games on ice. The modern version of hockey was codified in Montreal in 1875, in rules published by McGill University.

3. An emerging national identity: at the end of the 19th century, the newly federated Canada (1867) sought to distinguish itself from the United States. Hockey became a symbol of the "strong, cold-hardy, team-oriented Canadian."

The National Hockey League (NHL)

The NHL was founded in 1917 in Montreal, with 4 Canadian teams and 1 American team. Today it has 32 teams (7 Canadian, 25 American), with the Stanley Cup as its most coveted trophy.

The Stanley Cup

• It's been left on the side of the road, tossed into a swimming pool, and dropped into fountains
• Winning players have their names engraved on the trophy (for 60 years, after which they're retired to the Hall of Fame)
• No Canadian team has won it since 1993 (Montreal Canadiens) — a painful drought

The ritual of "shinny"

Practically every Canadian plays hockey as a kid. Shinny is informal hockey played on frozen lakes or public rinks, with no referee and no uniforms. Every neighborhood has its own tradition.

"Road hockey" is the street version, played with a tennis ball and a stick in front of the house. Iconic phrases: "Car!" (when a car approaches, everyone stops) and "Game on!" (play resumes).

• Toronto vs Montreal: the oldest rivalry in professional North American sport. English vs French, colonial heritage.
• Calgary vs Edmonton: the "Battle of Alberta." A provincial civil war.
• Vancouver vs whichever American team it faces in the playoffs

Women's hockey on the rise

• Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) — launched in 2024, 6 teams, professional salaries
• Team Canada Women — winner of multiple Olympic gold medals (rivalry with Team USA)

• Live: attending an NHL game costs CAD 80–500 depending on the team and seat. Toronto Maple Leafs tickets are the most expensive

• Icing, offside, offsides, hooking — the sport's own vocabulary
• A hat trick = 3 goals by one player in the same game. Fans throw hats onto the ice to celebrate
• The goalie wears extremely heavy protective gear; artistic masks have become a tradition
• The Zamboni — the machine that "resurfaces" the ice between periods. Invented in 1949
